R&N Cessford was founded in 1948 by Raymond and Norah Cessford. Initially, based at Whanland Farm, the business was a dairy, however Raymond was successful in obtaining two lend/lease combine harvesters from the Government post WW2, a stipulation of which was to maximise their use. This led to them covering an area spanning Dorset to Inverness in the post war years. Over the past 76 years the business has developed and diversified, but retains agriculture at the core of its operational activities.
During the intervening years, Raymond and Norah's sons, Martin and Bruce, retained Raymond's entrepreneurial spirit and drive to diversify the business into sectors such as haulage, fertiliser blending and bagging, ships agency work, the manufacturing and export of horticultural fertiliser products, and third-party storage for grains and fertiliser amongst other things.
Situated 7 miles from Montrose on the east coast of Scotland, R & N Cessford farms a total of 411 ha. Cropping is split between cereals, seed potatoes, root vegetables and a small amount of rhubarb. We supply fresh carrots to the processing market, seed potatoes to both home trade and export, and malting barley for distilling. We also offer some contracting services around our own farming activities.
Always in pursuit of better ways to farm, we work closely with Angus Horticulture, and focus on soil health and biology to maintain healthy crops and reduce artificial inputs.
In order to service the seasonal demands and pressures of both farming and our diversified businesses, both employees and machinery enjoy a varied life within our mix of enterprises.
We are proud to count many large local and national companies as customers, several of whom we have relationships spanning many decades.
